It is highly important to follow this procedure to contribute to the website content. <br>
__WARNING__: DO NOT commit straight into the __master__ / __development__ branches.
1. Feel free to [create a new issue](https://github.com/threefoldfoundation/www_threefold_io/issues/new) to report an error on the website, or if you have any suggestions on website improvements.
2. Make your own branch from the __development__ branch. By creating a new branch from __development__ you will be provided with the latest copy of the live website content at the staging site, www2.threefold.io.
3. Add your edits into your own branch via code editor locally, and push your local changes online. WARNING: DO NOT add your edits straight into __master__ / __development__ branch.
5. Create a PR to merge your own branch into **development**, and assign one of [ThreeFold's Web Admins](https://github.com/orgs/threefoldfoundation/teams/team_web_admin) on your PR as reviewer, or assign @sasha-astiadi as reviewer.
7. When PR is approved, you can see your changes on staging env on www2.threefold.io (development branch)
8. Admin will then create a PR to merge **development** into into **master** (production branch)
10. When PR is approved, you can see your changes live on production www.threefold.io (master branch).

# Threefold.io Website
# Threefold Website
Official website for Threefold.
Minimal, conscise implementation of www.threefold.io
**Administration & Access**
This website is administered by [ThreeFold's Web Admins](https://github.com/orgs/threefoldfoundation/teams/team_web_admin). Publishing changes directly to `development` and `master` branches requires access for repository admins. Please see [contribution procedures](CONTRIBUTING.md) for more information.
**Deployment**
- Production: [www.threefold.io](https://www.threefold.io) (`master` branch)
- Staging: [www2.threefold.io](https://www2.threefold.io) (`development` branch)
## Getting started
Edit markdown files in content folder and [preview](https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/languages/markdown).
1. Install `hero` if you don't have it
## Technologies used
- Markdown
- HTML
- Picocss
```bash
curl -sL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/freeflowuniverse/crystallib/development/scripts/installer_hero.sh | bash
```
## Next steps
1. Clone repository
Static site generator coming soon.
2. edit content or playbook
3. run playbook to preview website in browser
```bash
#is using branch development_zola
hero zola -u https://github.com/threefoldfoundation/www_threefold_io/tree/development_zola/playbook
#or in this repo, which does above
start.sh
```
4. save and publish changes
## Development
This website is built with `hero`, using `zola` under the hood.
```bash
#push changes
hero git push -f www_threefold_io -m 'some comment'
hero git push -f threefold_data -m 'some comment'
```
Finally, start a browsable local copy of the site that will respond to changes in the source files like this:
Zola will display a local address such as `http://127.0.0.1:1111` which you can click or copy and paste into your browser to view the site on your own machine.
That's it—have fun!

title: Does the ThreeFold use consensus?
---
ThreeFold uses blockchain technology only for what it's good for - Smart Contracts and Transactions.
<br/>
<br/>
An alternative to consensus mechanisms are peer-to-peer systems. While offering many similar benefits they are quite different in their design.
<br/>
<br/>
Crypto networks are internet-based networks, they use consensus mechanisms such as blockchains and cryptocurrencies (or tokens), which in turn incentivize the participants of said consensus (miners or delegates). While ThreeFold does use a blockchain and has it's own digital currency, instead of focusing on building a network that would be governed by everyone, it enables everyone to have their own governance mechanism. Every person or organization benefits from it's own private and secure environment on the ThreeFold Grid.
<br/>
<br/>
For instance, on the ThreeFold Grid, every user is able to store, run and access data and wokloads via their private key. When hosting data and workloads, a smart contract is created and stored in ThreeFold's blockchain database, which will then operate and execute their private environment via Threefold's autonomous technology. This provides a fully sovereign infrastructure model.
<br/>
<br/>
Put simply, instead of using consensus, peer-to-peer technology is used to provide true data sovereignty.

# Is there anything done for the ThreeFold Grid to be sustainable?
By starting from scratch on the operating system level, ThreeFold was able to eliminate a lot of complexity from the current web2 and web3 models to enable a super lighteight infrastructure.
By doing so we are able to enable up-to 10x energy savings as compared to any other alternative on the market. Also with the future end-user solutions we are building, we should be able to host 20 digital lives for as much energy as a light bulb would consume.
Nevertheless being sustainable is not enough in times of climate change. It is important for all of us to find ways to not only minimize our carbon footprints but also find ways to regenerate the surface and marine ecosystems of our world. ThreeFold commits to offset the ThreeFold Grid 3x in the form of carbon credits to support regenerative projects all around the world.

# What is the ThreeFold Grid?
The ThreeFold Grid is the worlds most advanced peer-to-peer Internet infrastructure. It can scale limitlessly, and brings a more performant, secure and sustainable Internet to host humanitys data and workloads.
Powered by ThreeFolds Open Source Technology, the ThreeFold Grid enables anyone to join the Internet and Cloud economy, and it allows any IT workloads that can run on Linux to benefit from a peer-to-peer infrastructure.
By using the ThreeFold Grid, developers can create websites, enterprise IT systems and store any files using the world's favourite tools and protocols such as Kubernetes and S3, and disperse their data and workloads across a decentralized cloud infrastructure.
For example, the ThreeFold Grid hosts its software within an unbreakable tamper proof environment, enabling systems to be developed and run without any firewalls, VPNs and security threats. It's peer-to-peer nature allows interoperability between a vast array of systems and removes the need of any intermediaries to allow people and organizations to build their own private and secure infrastructure. This allows the ThreeFold Grid to host developing environments that are completely self-contained and free from all security challenges found in today's cloud landscape. In a way, it flips the data center model upside down and eliminates all the exorbitant complexity, high cost and unsustainable models of IT.
The increased monopolisation of the Internet and Cloud by the big tech corporations of our world is threatening the neutrality of today's internet. Censorship, data collection and manipulation is already very present. People are being turned into products of a big AI machine. The ThreeFold Grid allows for a peer-to-peer (owned by all of us) and autonomous (no humans involved in the system) Internet that would decentralize the ownership and secure the neutrality of the Internet.
ThreeFold, is the only project that started from scratch at the infrastructure level with a super lightweight and stateless operating system that built a full blown architecture to allow peer-to-peer systems to thrive.
We believe it is the only way to a liberalized Internet as imagined by it's initial creators.

title: Can we have multiple 3Nodes in the same household?
---
Running multiple 3Nodes in the same household is possible, however your connection will be heavily influenced by this.
<br/>
<br/>
Putting more than 1 3Node behind a typical consumer grade internet connection (100 mbps download / 10 mbps upload) will make your connection overloaded and that will have effect on a quality of capacity you provide (something we will grade in the future) this will impact usage for third parties.

When behind a more rigid connection e.g. a good fiber connection, running multiple 3Nodes at once should be fairly easy to do.

title: What is the difference between Farming and Mining?
---
While initially a simple computer was enough to mine Bitcoin, its increasing value quickly sparked interest, however, the difficulty of the calculations required for mining is automatically adjusted according to the number of machines that are candidates for these operations. Thus, the more miners there are, the more complex the calculations. With a price that today exceeds several tens of thousands of euros, it is useless to try to mine Bitcoin with a simple desktop computer, the sector became so competitive that chips dedicated to these calculations have been created.
<br/>
<br/>
ThreeFold's farming model has a very different and simple approach.
<br/>
<br/>
ThreeFold's farming model uses Proof-of-Capacity (PoC) which is more efficient than Proof-of-Stake (PoS) mechanisms. PoS is as of today the most energy efficient protocol since it barely requires any CPU time, the only energy needed to keep the validator connected to the network is enough disk space to hold the blockchain and the system. But on ThreeFold you don't need any validator to secure the chain as PoC is only used as a token distribution mechanism.
<br/>
<br/>
All that is needed for PoC is enough disk space to host ThreeFold's unique operating system - Zero-OS. The capacity provided by the 3Node is automatically detected and verified by Zero-OS and stored in the Blockchain Database, making it available to the ThreeFold Grid. The Zero-OS is super-lightweight, weighing 200MB, making it incredibly efficient. We can expect ThreeFold's Farming model to be up-to 10,000x more efficient than Bitcoin mining and 10x more efficient than any PoS protocol.

title: How to estimate my potential Farming earnings?
---
We have added **Farming Calculator** to our wiki where in the section "Calculator" you will find a link to the most recent version of the calculator.
<br/>
<br/>
When opening it you will get the read-only version, to make your own calculations you can download it by clicking: **File > Export**.
<br/>
<br/>
The sheet was created in an open office and we recommend using that for making your edits.
<br/>
<br/>
**[Farming Calculator](https://library.threefold.me/info/tfgrid/#/threefold__farming_calculator)**
<br/>
**The way to use the Calculator is as follows:**
1. On the hardware tab: Go to column J
2. Fill in the specs of your 3Node on line 4 - 7
3. Fill in the variables of your 3Node on line 10 - 16 (CPR rewards are 15 TFT per CPR at time of writing)
4. On line 18 make sure you put all 3Nodes on 0 except for column J. Set that to the number of 3Nodes you are looking to add to your farm
<br/>
<br/>
Now all numbers we need for your Hardware in. On line 25 & 26 you will find your SU and CU totals. These bring you to a CPR number which can be found on line 35.
<br/>
<br/>
You can now go to the params tab and fill in your KW/h price to make an accurate as possible calculation.
<br/>
<br/>
Once the Hardware and Params tab are filled in you can more on to the Calculation tab. But before you do it's important you understand these are your own calculations. This is not investment advice and should not be looked at in that manner.
<br/>
<br/>
1. On line 12: Fill in the tokenprice in 5 years for the scenario you would like to simulate for yourself
2. On line 18: Fill in the amount of cultivation (usage) of your 3Nodes you think you'll get
3. On line 19: Fill in the amount of idle-time you think you 3Nodes will have (means, not running under load this does not mean they aren't used.)
4. On line 20: Fill in the either 10% (if you are not planning on selling any capacity actively yourself) or 50% if you are planning to sell your capacity yourself.
<br/>
<br/>
You have now succesfully completed your first calculation and will get a rough possible ROI on line 33. You can change your calculation now to see how this impacts that number.

title: How will buyers choose one of capacity over another?
---
The best capacity choice will depend on different factors that will vary according to user needs. Some key statistics such as the uptime of the 3Node and the reputation of the farmer will be made available on the Threefold Grid Explorer. According to these statistics, users can choose the most trustworthy 3Nodes to host their data and workloads on the grid.
<br/>
<br/>
The right choice of 3Nodes also depends on the workloads that are being hosted. For instance the speed of download and the resilience of the files or workloads come with their own calculations. On the Threefold Grid, it is possible to disperse data and workloads across different nodes. If more speed is required, it will be more advantageous to store the data or run the workloads in physical proximity, closer to the users. If more resilience is needed for the development or storage environment, dispersing the same files and workloads across geographical regions will provide more security.

title: Is Farming profitable? How much TFT can be earned per month?
---
The farming rewards have been designed by the ThreeFold Foundation in a way to ensure a fair reward while also incentivizing the right actors for the future growth of the ThreeFold Grid.
<br/>
<br/>
The amount of TFT farmed by a 3Node depends on the compute and storage capacity made available to the ThreeFold Grid.
<br/>
<br/>
There are three forms of rewards in ThreeFold's Farming model with Grid 3.0 launched in Q3 2021:
* **Farming Rewards:** Once booted by ThreeFolds operating system, the 3Nodes Internet capacity will be verified and added to the network. Farmers earn TFT monthly for keeping the capacity online.
* **Cultivation Rewards:** When users reserve capacity on the ThreeFold Grid to store their data or run their applications.
<br/>
<br/>
The reward mechanism for cultivation goes as follows:
- 10% of the utilization fee is rewarded to Farmers.
- 25% gets burnt to ensure scarcity of TFT in the new Internet economy.
- 5% goes to the Foundation for promotional purposes.
- 60% is used to reward the sales channels, incentivizing direct or indirect sales agents to promote the usage of the Threefold Grid capacity.
<br/>
<br/>
Of course, if the Farmer sells the capacity of their 3Nodes, they will benefit from the sales channel reward on top of the utilization reward.
The profitability of Farming all depends on how much capacity you will connect as well as the market price of TFT.

title: What do I need to do to become a Farmer?
---
All you need to become a farmer is a 3Node, electricity and network connection.
<br/>
<br/>
There are two ways to get a 3Node:
- by purchasing a Plug & Play 3Node
- by building your own (DIY)
<br/>
<br/>
The ThreeFold Foundation and ThreeFold Farming Cooperatives around the world are providing Plug & Play 3Nodes that are already booted by Zero-OS, permitting anyone to just order and connect a 3Node to the Threefold Grid without the need for technical knowledge.
<br/>
<br/>
Nevertheless almost any reasonably modern 64-bit computer with an Intel or AMD processor, running ThreeFolds Zero OS can be turned into a 3Node. The team has had some success testing ARM based devices as well, and that can be expected as another option in the future.

title: What is the 3Node?
---
Any Intel or AMD (the world's 2 most famous hardware chips) server-like hardware can be turned into a 3Node. It was important for ThreeFold to enable different entry points and to maximize the reach across today's industry and allow anyone to find their most suitable settings to join the ThreeFold Grid.
<br/>
<br/>
A 3Node can be as small as a shoe box or as big as a data-center rack, allowing people to add Internet capacity anywhere, whether in their home office, as well as in small data centers, empowering their cities, villages and communities with a data sovereign and planet positive Internet infrastructure that can host the data of millions of people and earn income in TFT - ThreeFold's official digital currency.

3Nodes are powered by ThreeFolds open source operating system Zero-OS, and can host the data and workloads of thousands of people. When providing Internet capacity to the ThreeFold Grid, you are rewarded with TFT. And thanks to our proof-of-capacity model, your 3Node does all the heavy lifting for you.

title: What is Proof-of-Capacity (PoC)?
---
The amount of TFT earned by Farmers depending on the amount of Internet capacity they provide to the ThreeFold Grid. The validation of their contribution is done by ThreeFolds unique algorithm called Proof-of-Capacity (PoC).
<br/>
<br/>
To participate in PoC, hardware needs to be booted by ThreeFolds open source operating system - Zero OS. Once installed, their Internet capacity is automatically detected by ThreeFolds Blockchain Database. Every month, Farmers are rewarded for keeping the Internet capacity online.

All users must agree to the Grid Usage Agreement before they can deploy any workload on the Grid.
<br/>
<br/>
In this Agreement, it is stated that all workloads ran by the user fall under the respective user's liability and if illegal actions were to be taken respective user will be held accountable for it.

title: Should I as a farmer sell my own capacity, or is ThreeFold doing that?
---
To promote the utilization of the ThreeFold Grid's Internet capacity, we created a mechanism that is called "cultivation".
<br/>
<br/>
Cultivation is meant to incentivise sales channels to promote the Threefold Grid's Internet capacity and earn TFT for it.
<br/>
<br/>
When a user utilizes a farmer's capacity, the transaction is distributed as follows:
- 10% of the utilization fee is rewarded to Farmers.
- 25% gets burnt to ensure scarcity of TFT in the new Internet economy.
- 5% goes to the Foundation for promotional purposes.
- 60% is used to reward the sales channels.
<br/>
<br/>
If the Farmer sells the capacity of their 3Nodes themselves, they will benefit from the 60% sales channel reward on top of the 10% utilization reward.

title: Why should I become a Farmer?
---
There are many reasons to become a Farmer on the ThreeFold Grid.
<br/>
<br/>
The Internet economy is booming, and we expect 125 Zetabytes of capacity to be connected to the Internet in the next five years to cope with the rising data demands of emerging technologies such as IoT, blockchain and Big Data.
<br/>
<br/>
A Zetabyte has twenty-one zeros. While the market is booming, it remains controlled only by large tech corporations that build hyper-scale data centers and turn people into products. This centralized approach is inefficient, extremely costly and unsustainable.
<br/>
<br/>
With ThreeFold, anyone can plug-in 3Nodes and take part in the global Internet economy (we call this process Farming and people Farmers). By doing so, Farmers not only contribute to the growth of a neutral, secure and sustainable Internet infrastructure, but also get rewarded for it in TFT on a monthly basis for keeping Internet capacity online.

title: What is TFT?
---
The ThreeFold Token (TFT) is the official currency of ThreeFold. It represents a unit of Internet capacity in the form of cloud computing, internet storage or networking and is 100% backed by real hardware.
<br/>
<br/>
On one hand, TFT is earned by all ThreeFold node operators with on a montly basis for providing the Internet and cloud capacity needed to host humanity's data and workloads.
<br/>
<br/>
On the other hand, TFT energizes the ThreeFold Grid, allowing people to store their files and tun their applications via smart contract, eliminating all forms of intermediaires that could corrupt their data and making them digitally autonomous. <br/>
<br/>
<br/>
Learn more about TFT [here](https://www.threefold.io/tft).

---
Yes, the value of TFT is the same on Binance Smart Chain (BSC) and Stellar. You can find how to migrate between BSC and Stellar [here in the wiki](https://library.threefold.me/info/threefold#/tokens/threefold__tft_bsc_bridge). Note that the exchange price of TFT may vary on different exchanges according to market conditions.

title: What is the potential price of TFT?
---
The total number of TFT is limited and the growth of the ThreeFold Grid is limtitless. In that sense, the price of TFT is expected to rise according to the growth and utilization fo the ThreeFold Grid.
<br/>
<br/>
Today, we look back on how Bitcoin decentralized the banking industry. In 10 years the world will look back on how ThreeFold decentralized the Internet. In one way, ThreeFold is inevitable.
<br/>
<br/>
Important note: The ThreeFold Token (TFT) is not an investment instrument and it's value should not be based on speculation. A TFT represents a unit of compute, storage and network capacity on the ThreeFold Grid and is backed by real hardware. You should buy TFT only if you believe in the future of the ThreeFold Grid.

title: How and where can I buy TFT?
---
To buy TFT, users can go to regulated exchanges, DEXs (decentralized exchanges) and wallets or directly to ThreeFold's buy and sell platform. Like most digital currencies, TFT is transferable to any other compatible wallet.
<br/>
<br/>
The most used platforms are:
1. [Pancake Swap](https://library.threefold.me/info/threefold#/tokens/threefold__tft_binance_defi) to exchange any Binance Smart Chain token to TFT.
3. [Stellar DEX](https://www.manual.grid.tf/documentation/threefold_token/buy_sell_tft/tft_lobstr/tft_lobstr_short_guide.html) to exchange XLM or other stellar based tokens to TFT (multiple wallets and DEX UI supported).
Learn more about the other buying options [here](https://www.manual.grid.tf/documentation/threefold_token/buy_sell_tft/buy_sell_tft.html)

<br/>
<br/>
Coinmarketcap reports some market capitalisation but they have their own methodology of calculating market capitalisation. We often share the latest data about TFT with them to reduce the gap between their calculations and ours.

title: What is the difference between staking and vesting?
---
In general, staking mechanisms offer additional rewards in exchange of holding some tokens. With the ThreeFold Grid 3.0 release, it is possible to stake your TFT by keeping them in your wallet. By doing so, you'll receive discounts on capacity reservation. You can find more information about staking [here](https://library.threefold.me/info/threefold#/tfgrid/pricing/threefold__pricing?id=discount-levels).
<br/>
<br/>
The ThreeFold Connect App also provides a vesting option. Vesting is a voluntarily mechanism that allows community members to reduce the circulating supply by locking up their TFT. While it doesn't provide any personal benefits, it has a positive impact on the overall tokenomics. Learn more about vesting [here](https://library.threefold.me/info/threefold#/tokens/threefold__vesting_overview).
