Situation

  • For V4 nodes, we want to have an 18 month window where there are capacity rewards sent to the farmers
  • The node sellers usually test the nodes in their facilities before sending the nodes to the farmers
  • This means that the 18 month window would start the moment the node sellers test the nodes, but it is not ideal.
    • There can be some time between the node sellers' testing the node and the farmer receiving the node and then officially start farming

Proposition

  • Is there a way to set the nodes in a "test" mode so that the node sellers do not "eat up" the 18 month time of the farmers?
  • Then when the node seller is ready to send the nodes, he can turn it into "production/ready for official farming" mode
  • Then the farmer receives the node, plug it in, and the 18 month period starts at this moment.

"when we build new nodes, we always test them a while on the farmer's ID and also to get the node ID and inform the customer about it. If the 18-month POC period is going to become a real thing, I suggest we start counting at the first full month payout or so, to prevent the counting to start the minute I turn it on to generate the Node ID. It could take weeks before the customer receives their node and turn it on, we cannot deduct that form the 18 months. "

Notes

@thabeta I'll let you check this and see if it makes sense. Thanks!

I don't think that warrants adding new code or operating modes to Zos. The way that data is recorded doesn't need to change either.

It's enough to make a simple rule that the 18 months begin the first month that the node gets paid. An additional clause can stipulate that the 18 months start elapsing anyway if the node does not make its first earnings within 3 or 6 months from registration.

Concerning this "18 months begin the first month that the node gets paid"

The situation would be this

  • Someone buys a node online from robert
  • Robert builds it on his side, so he tries it on the grid, it thus gets registered
  • Some days/weeks later, the buyer plugs it and starts farming

So if the 18 months start the moment the node gets paid, the farmers will not really farm 18 months with this reward scheme. Wdyt?

The solution could be:

  • Someone buys a node online from robert
  • Robert builds it on his side, so he tries it on the grid, it thus gets registered
  • Some days/weeks later, the buyer plugs it and starts farming, so the node reappears online
  • At this moment, we start the 18 month period
